Jill Scott was born on April 4 1972 at Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. As an only girl She was also raised with her grandmother, who was also maternal. Scott was educated at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following the completion of her studies, Scott enrolled into Temple University. She completed her secondary education there while working two jobs. She hoped to be a high school English teacher. However, her dream was put on hold when after 3 years of studies and as a teachers aide she dropped out of college. She began her career as a spoken word artist performing her own pieces in live poetry readings. She later joined forces to Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. They wrote You Got Me together. During Roots' performance, she revealed herself to be an artist. Following that, she started collaboration with other musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. In the Canada tour of the Broadway musical Rent, she gained valuable experiences performing. She was also the very first signing agent for Hidden Beach Recordings.
